Johannesburg - A boy, believed to be 12 years old, was killed and several other school children were injured following a collision between two cars in Bramley, north of Johannesburg, on Tuesday, Johannesburg Emergency Services said.

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said two cars collided at the corner of Louis Botha Avenue and Athol Street on Tuesday afternoon. After the impact, one of the cars went on to hit a group of about 20 school children who had been standing at the side of the road.

"One of the kids unfortunately lost his life and was declared dead on the scene. One was critically injured and taken to a nearby hospital," he said.

Mulaudzi said at least 20 children had been standing in the area. Most of them had sustained minor injuries and were treated on the scene.

Neither of the drivers were injured, Mulaudzi said.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, although there were unconfirmed reports that one of the drivers had skipped a red light.
