Johannesburg - Chinese President Xi Jinping was given a warm welcome by President Jacob Zuma at the Union Buildings on Wednesday afternoon.

Jinping and his ministers were given a 21 gun salute and a performance by the SA National Defence Force band.

He was invited by Zuma to co-chair the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Co-operation.

The Chinese president said in his arrival statement that he looked forward to having an in-depth exchange with Zuma on bilateral relations as well as international and regional matters of mutual interest.

"I am confident this summit will yield fruitful results and write a new chapter of historic significance in China-Africa relations," he said.

The South African government has described its relationship with China as being "at its best in history".

The Johannesburg Summit will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre from December 4 to 5 under the theme: "Africa-China Progressing Together: Win-Win Cooperation for Common Development".
