Bloemfontein – Free State police said on Wednesday that church officials should contact their local police stations to schedule a security survey.

According to Constable Maselela Langa, a security survey would provide churches with suggestions on how to combat crime. Langa said there was a "new trend" of targeting places of worship in the province.

"We have had incidences in the past where churches were robbed or attacked, and word on the ground says churches are now targeted more than businesses," he said.

But he could not divulge how many churches had been robbed.

"Church robberies are now a new trend and we want to put a stop to it during this festive season. Churches pose more of an opportunity for crime than other facilities in our society," Langa told News24.

Langa said they urged churches to take necessary steps to ensure their safety.

"Churches should ensure doors and windows are locked after services and meetings. Items usually associated with houses of worship should be marked for identification," he said.
