Cape Town – City of Cape Town firefighters have managed to contain the fire that engulfed a building on Metal Road in Blackheath on Thursday afternoon.

However firefighters would remain at the scene "for an extended period", spokesperson Edward Bosch told News24 on Thursday night.

The cause of the fire has not been determined at this stage, he said via WhatsApp.

"There are currently 12 fire tenders (fire engines) and 55 fire fighters. No injuries have been reported and the extent of damage to the building has not been determined yet," said Bosch.

The City of Cape Town's fire and rescue service had responded to the fire after 15:00, he said.

A large quantity of recycling waste got burnt on the property.
