City Press sports columnist Simnikiwe Xabanisa waltzed away with the sports columnist of the year gong at the 37th Annual SAB Sports Media Awards on Friday.

Xabanisa – who pens the hard-hitting Side Entry column every Sunday – has been a sports writer for 17 years, during which he has covered the Olympics, Rugby World Cups and Athletics World Championships.

In the past, Xabanisa won the SAB Sports Media most promising newcomer award, the Vodacom sports writer of the year award and the Sasol Rugby Writers’ Springbok writer of the year award.
