A Twitter user first posted a photograph on Friday morning apparently showing people on the roof, leaning over it and facing down.

This led to some questioning if they were snipers.

But the initial tweet of the image posted by Twitter user @Molatelo_Mak later appeared to have been removed.

A source with knowledge of security operations told News24 the people station on the Luthuli House rooftop were police snipers.

Colonel Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson to the Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane, said: "We don't give out operational information. I thereby can't confirm or deny".

DA leader Mmusi Maimane could be seen wearing what appeared to be a bullet proof vest underneath his shirt as he arrived for a march in Johannesburg.
