Johannesburg – A cleverly concealed cocaine stash was discovered inside books at OR Tambo International Airport on Friday, the South African Revenue Service (Sars) said.

The shipment was on its way from South Africa to India when it was intercepted during a routine inspection by Sars customs officials, spokesperson Sandile Memela said.

Customs officials found the books to be unusually heavy, he said. Memela said further examination revealed that the pages of the books had been hollowed. The drugs were stuffed inside.

A drug testing kit was administered and reacted positive for cocaine weighing 2kg valued at R575 400. The consignment was handed to the police for further investigation.
