Coligny – The two Coligny men accused of killing a teen boy allegedly made a witness drink to the point of intoxication, shot at him, and warned him not to tell anyone about the incident.

This, according to testimony in the Coligny Magistrate’s Court by Brigadier Clifford Kgorane, a member of the team investigating the death of 16-year-old Matlhomola Mosweu on April 20, Netwerk24 reported.

Pieter Doorewaard, 26, and Phillip Schutte, 34, applied for bail on Tuesday subsequent to handing themselves over to police last week following violent protests in the town after the teen's death.

Kgorane testified that according to the suspects' initial statement, the boy had jumped off the back of their bakkie.

Schutte and Doorewaard drove off and didn’t call for help for the injured teen, but asked a witness to stay with him.

They then went to the police station to report the incident. They had said they couldn’t stay at the scene because they had business to attend to, Kgorane testified.

The witness said the suspects had taken his address details and visited him at his home early on the Friday morning following the incident.

He told Kgorane that Doorewaard and Schutte had plied him with liquor and warned him not to tell anyone about the incident.

'No bail for their own safety'

"The witness said they had driven him to a dam, made him drunk and forced him to run in front of the bakkie while shooting at him."

According to Kgorane no shell casings had been found at the scene.

"I would recommend that the suspects do not get bail. Releasing them [on bail] could lead to widespread unrest in Coligny. They should remain in custody for their own safety," Kgorane said.

Pieter Karsten, who employs Doorewaard and Schutte, testified as a character witness and described them as hardworking. Doorewaard is Karsten’s nephew.

"Pieter is gentle, honest and works well with everyone in the Coligny community…

"Phillip, my fleet manager, plays a cardinal role in my business and helps wherever I need him. He doesn’t interfere in anyone else’s matters and has always been conscientious," Karsten testified.

The bail application was postponed until Wednesday, where Kgorane would continue testifying.

Earlier, it was alleged that Matlhomola and another boy had been caught stealing sunflowers.

The other boy apparently managed to run away. The accused were alleged to have been taking Matlhomola to the police station when he apparently jumped off the back of their bakkie.
