Pretoria – A 19-year-old college student who is accused of the statutory rape of  a 12-year-old girl in Sunnyside on Monday, is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

The suspect, who resides at the same premises as the victim, was arrested on Monday night after he ran away from the victim’s home when he was spotted by her mother, Sunnyside Station Commander Daniel Mavimbela told News24.

When the mother arrived home from work on Monday afternoon, her younger daughter told her the suspect was taking a bath.

“She heard voices inside the bathroom, but didn’t open the door at that stage,” Mavimbela said.

Mavimbela said it was only when the suspect peaked out of the bathroom door when the mother saw him with the victim and he ran away.

In a statement, Mavimbela said the suspect is expected to be charged with statutory rape.

“Our communities should take into cognisance that though the age of sexual consent was lowered to twelve, that only applies to sex between young teenagers, meaning from the ages of 12-15.”
