The hunt is on for suspects who robbed a G4S van while a guard was collecting money at a Total garage in Tasbet Park, Emalahleni, Mpumalanga police said.WATCH

Pretoria - Community members assaulted two men who were apparently impersonating police officers on Tuesday evening after the men allegedly tried to rob a home in Lotus Gardens, Pretoria West.

Two of their accomplices managed to get away.

In a statement, Captain Augustinah Selepe said two men gained entry into the property after they hit the homeowner in the face. He had asked to see their South African Police Service (SAPS) identity cards before he would let them in.

Another two men arrived at the property and one of them introduced himself as an SAPS captain to the homeowner and showed him a brown docket cover.

The four men told the homeowner that they were required to search his bedroom and forcefully took him there.

The homeowner managed to run outside where he alerted his neighbours that he was being attacked.

Suspect hospitalised

Police were informed and immediately deployed to the scene.

Two men fled, but members of the community managed to apprehend two suspects.

Once apprehended, the community assaulted both men.

One of them has been admitted to a nearby hospital and is in a stable condition, Selepe said.

The homeowner reported that nothing was stolen.

The two suspects are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Police are investigating whether this is an isolated incident.
