Community rejoices after boy pulled from rubble – paramedics

Durban – A Durban community rejoiced when a 4-year-old boy was pulled out from under the rubble of an informal residential structure that had collapsed while he was in it, paramedics said on Sunday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Chris Botha, said at around 09:43 paramedics and firefighters responded to a structural collapse at an informal settlement along Johanna Road, Sea Cow Lake.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the heavy rain had caused a structure collapse while a 4-year-old boy was still in the building [which was] made from rocks and wire.”

Botha said when paramedics and fire services arrived at the scene, they had to cut through the wire before they were able to dig through the stones to get to the child.

“A shout of joy was heard when they managed to pull the very traumatised boy from the rubble,” he said.

Botha said the seriously injured child was treated at the scene before he was transported to a Durban hospital for further treatment.
