Cape Town – Freedom Under Law (FUL) on Friday welcomed the constitutional court ruling which compelled Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) to continue distributing of social grants.

“[The court] subjected the ongoing process of social grant payments to rigorous oversight and in so doing effectively quelled the anxiety that millions of grant recipients must have felt,” FUL executive officer Nicole Fritz said in a statement.

“FUL also notes the serious concern registered by the Court at the extent to which the Minister… and the South Africa Social Security Agency placed a cornerstone of our constitutional democracy, the right to social assistance, in jeopardy.”

In its ruling, the constitutional court extended the contract Sassa had with CPS to distribute social grants by 12 months.

The court previously found the contract illegal and ordered Sassa to restart a tender process and award a new tender by April 1.

The court also ordered social development minister Bathabile Dlamini to report to the court in three-month intervals on the progress of awarding a new contract.
