Cape Town - A constable charged with stealing from suspects while on duty has been released on R2000 bail.

The officer, Frederick Buys, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and faces two charges of theft.

He will make his next appearance on March 30.

According to police, a 36-year-old Maitland police constable was arrested on Monday by the SAPS’s anti-corruption unit.

This after a cellphone was stolen from a car the officer had searched on November 14 2015.

On January 6 this year, money was also stolen from a person who had been arrested.
