Cooler weather, some rain expected over Christmas

2015-12-22 12:30

Bloemfontein – A heatwave over parts of South Africa is expected to end on Tuesday, the SA Weather Service said.

"We are expecting a drop in the day time temperatures from Wednesday – and this will break the chain of the heatwave," South African Weather Service forecaster Lebogang Mashile told News24.

Mashile said there was a good chance of showers and thundershowers for the rest of the week in some parts of the country.

She said, there was a 60% chance of thunder showers on Christmas Day - especially in Gauteng, the western highveld of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the southern western parts of Limpopo.

Last week, parts of the country, especially in the North West, experienced a heatwave, with Vryburg exceeding 38 degrees, while Upington in the Northern Cape reached 42 degrees.

There would also be a 30% chance of rain in the eastern parts of Free State, and also the eastern parts of the North West on Christmas Day, she said.

Rain was also expected for the Christmas weekend in the Eastern Cape.

"Conditions will be warm to hot, with a bit of light rain expected in the Border (East London) area later on Christmas day. Rain is expected on Boxing Day, which should be a welcome relief in the dry areas in the east," she said.
