Cape Town - A policeman was shot dead and his colleague wounded when they responded to a suspected attempted ATM bombing on Monday morning in Delft, the Western Cape Hawks have confirmed.

The 40-year-old constable was shot and killed at 03:20 by two gunmen wielding AK47s, spokesperson Lieutenant Lloyd Ramovha said.

The officer as well as a warrant officer were responding to a business robbery at the Delft Main Road petrol station.

The suspects, along with three accomplices who had been inside the shop, then fled the scene.

"The suspects left explosives on the scene which suggests they were probably there to bomb the ATM," Ramovha said.

The warrant officer is currently in hospital.
