Durban – A man responsible for the death of two police officers received three life sentences, the Hawks said on Tuesday.

Ayanda Hlupeko, 30, was sentenced for armed robbery with aggravated circumstances, three counts of murder and attempted murder in the Ramsgate High Court.

On April 30 2015, three police officers from Harding Police Station responded to an alarm that went off at a wholesale store in the Harding CBD.

"Unbeknown to the officers, there was an armed robbery in progress and when they drove towards the wholesaler, the suspects opened fire at the police vehicle with AK47 rifles. The police vehicle caught alight as a result of the automatic gunfire unleashed by Hlupeko and his accomplices," the Hawks said.

Bystanders managed to rescue a female police officer from the vehicle, while the other two - Constable Mpendulo Welcome Jaca, 37 and Constable Zamukwanda Wiseman Majoka, 34 - were stuck in the burning vehicle.

They died on the scene.

Hlupeko was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery, three life sentences for the murder of two police officers and 10 years for shooting a security guard during the robbery.
