Johannesburg - A police officer is in a serious condition after he was shot by a man in Klipspruit West, Soweto, on Tuesday morning, police said.

Police had been following up on information of alleged dealing in illegal firearms, Captain Mavela Masondo said.

When officers knocked on the door of a house in Klipspruit West, a man opened and started shooting, hitting the officer in the leg.

Police cornered the 35-year-old suspect and arrested him.

He would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon, on charges of attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
