Pietermaritzburg - A quick-thinking family managed to fend off six brazen attackers trying to gain access to their Copesville home in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Gerard Marrian, his wife and mother-in-law were in the home when they heard their dogs barking and woke up to investigate.

“Six men managed to jump into our property from our neighbour’s yard. We heard a loud bang when they broke down our gate. I immediately ran to the door and wedged myself between it and a cupboard to keep it closed. The men continued to push open the door and when they found an opening, they put a gun through and fired shots into the house and one through the window,” he said.

Shortly after, Marrian’s wife and mother-in-law joined him in his struggle to keep the door closed.

Police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said Marrian’s mother-in-law was hit in the shoulder by one of the bullets.

“Six suspects were trying to gain access into the property. One suspect fired a shot through the window and hit the mother-in-law in the shoulder blade,” Ebrahim said.

Marrian said his mother-in-law continued to help keep the men from entering the property even after she was shot.

“We are glad she is okay. She is a very strong woman,” he said.

Marrian said his mother-in-law was treated in hospital and was back home on Sunday.

“While the incident was taking place, my wife screamed for our neighbour, who came out and began shouting at the men. It was only then that they left the property.

“Even after we pressed our emergency panic button, the men continued to push the door open. It is the third time people have attempted to break into our home this year. On the other occasions they tried to force the gate open, but this was the first time they almost got into the house,” he said.
