Cape Town - Police are investigating the death of a University of Cape Town student who fell from the sixth floor of a residence on Thursday night.

Khanyile Simamukele, a third-year student majoring in gender studies and anthropology, died at the Forest Hill residence at 22:45, UCT communication and marketing director Gerda Kruger said in a statement on the institution’s website on Friday.

"Medical personnel immediately rushed to the scene and attempted to resuscitate her, but she passed away," she confirmed.

"The full circumstances that preceded or led to the incident and tragic death are not yet known, but are being investigated. We do not wish to speculate on these matters or to assume facts that may not be accurate.

"It is important that the investigation concludes so that a full picture may emerge. The South African Police Services are investigating and UCT is working alongside them."

The university was offering support to Simamukele’s family.

Counselling was also being provided to those affected by her death, Kruger said.

Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed an inquest docket had been opened for investigation.
