Durban - A crack team of cops and private investigators on Tuesday night recovered all three luxury Mercedes Benz sedans – worth R4m – which were stolen from the East London quayside last week.

The team, consisting of operatives from Magma Investigations and the Police's East London Vehicle Theft Unit, traced the last vehicle to a house in Umlazi near Durban on Tuesday.

The other two vehicles had been recovered in Mthatha and Butterworth.

A string of arrests linked to the theft were still expected.

Dispatch Live had reported that the thieves had posed as employees of a local vehicle logistics company in an effort to steal the three luxury German cars from the docks.

The brazen theft of the vehicles from the West Bank side of the harbour took place not long after a cargo ship carrying dozens of Mercedes-Benz vehicles from Germany docked at the car terminal, the publication reported.

Magma Investigations head Shaheen Sulieman said that his investigators had worked around the clock with the police.

He said that none of the vehicles had been fitted with tracker units and that they had relied on a wide net of informers that eventually led them to the cars.

Police spokespersons were not immediately available for comment.
