Pretoria  - Members of the South African Police Service National Intervention Unit (NIU) and a group of suspected Zama Zamas (illegal miners) got involved in a skirmish this evening at approximately 18:00 resulting in one fatality and a number of injuries.

The police were acting on a tip-off about guns. The unit stopped a minibus with a group of male occupants in the Benoni area in the East Rand believed to be Zama Zamas and their so-called "protectors" according to police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

A shoot-out ensued resulting in one NIU member being shot and wounded.

Six suspects were also shot and wounded. One suspect died a short while later while the other five were taken to hospital under police guard.

Another six suspects were arrested and five handguns recovered.

The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to establish if they were used to commit other crimes.
