Cape Town - The ANC on Thursday welcomed the sentencing of former Buffalo City mayor Zukisa Faku to three years' house arrest for fraud.ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said the sentence sent a strong message that the organisation would not tolerate corruption. The East London Regional Court on Tuesday sentenced her for fraud and theft. She used the municipality’s credit card to buy sunglasses, perfumes and other items during an overseas trip in 2010, while she was Buffalo City mayor."Corruption is a cancer that undermines public confidence, not just in leadership of government, but also in the ANC,” Kodwa said.He said the judiciary had to be merciless and disregard an accused’s personal standing.Kodwa said Faku would immediately cease being an ANC MP and had to serve her sentence, as there was no option to pay a fine.'Abused her position'ANC Chief Whip in Parliament, Jackson Mthembu, said on Wednesday that the process of filling the vacancy would begin."We agree with the judge in the case that the conduct of Comrade Faku, which includes abuse of municipal credit card when she was Buffalo City mayor, was abusive of her position of trust," he said. The party accepted the judgment and would ensure it was fully implemented.Faku was found guilty and convicted on nine counts of fraud in March. She would also have to do community service.
