Johannesburg – A couple was robbed before they were shot and wounded while waiting for a tow truck in Alberton, Johannesburg on Friday, paramedics said.

The pair, in their 40s, were on their way home from a holiday when their car broke down on the N12 near Voortrekker Road around 14:00, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

They were in the emergency lane when a man approached them and demanded valuables at gunpoint. He shot the woman in her stomach and the husband in the leg and ran away.

The husband flagged down passing motorists and paramedics were called. The couple were treated on the scene and transported to hospital, Vermaak said.

Police were not immediately available for comment.
