Cape Town - A threat to the lives of the two men accused of killing 6-year-old Saadiqah Lippert in Bokmakierie resulted in the Athlone Magistrate's Court being cleared on Thursday.

The police's Tactical Response Unit cleared the courtroom and later only allowed the child's parents and the media to sit in on proceedings.

This after threats were received of a planned revenge shooting in the court.

Police said it was a safety precaution to protect the suspects.

According to the State, the gunfire which claimed the child's life is believed to be gang and drug related.

The duo, aged 22 and 26, were charged with her murder after witnesses identified them. They will only be named once an ID parade has taken place.

Locals and loved ones of the family stood on benches to peer into the courtroom through a window, but were warned to retreat by police.

The Garlandale Primary Grade 1 pupil was shot in the stomach when she stepped out of her grandmother's door on Monday evening.

She later died in Groote Schuur Hospital.

The case was postponed to May 12.
