Cape Town - A Pietermaritzburg drug-dealing couple's stash of R36 000 in cash and 94 jewellery items, showed they were large dealers who sold to lower level dealers.

This information was contained in a KwaZulu-Natal High Court order in terms of which their cash and jewellery was forfeited to the state on the basis that they were proceeds of crime.

The order was ratified by acting Judge Sharon Marks on Monday.

A detective warrant officer testified that large drug dealers often hid large amounts of money and jewellery in their homes - the same modus operandi used by convicted drug dealers Terence and Vigie Moonsamy.

Dealers often used jewellery instead of cash in drug sales, the officer said. His name was withheld.

The investigator told the court that drugs found at the Moonsamy premises were cannabis, Phenacetin pain killers, Mandrax and 35 jars of cocaine. This large amount of drugs showed they were large dealers.

Terence had 13 previous convictions including assault, malicious damage to property, dealing in liquor and reckless and negligent driving.

In November 2012 Terence pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years, suspended for five years, for dealing in cocaine and six years, suspended for three years, for dealing in Mandrax.

In November 2013 Vigie, who told a court in a bail application that she was a housewife, pleaded guilty and was fined R15 000 and sentenced to five years in jail, which was suspended. She had four previous convictions, three relating to drug deals.
