Court stops man from sending anti-Semitic emails

Durban - The Equality Court on Tuesday interdicted a Durban man from disseminating anti-Semitic emails.

Magistrate Aletta Moolman ruled that “the emails distributed by Snowy Smith impinge adversely on the dignity of the Jewish people and constitute hate speech against people of the Jewish faith or belief and ethnic origin”.  

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies welcomed the judgment. The board took the matter to court in April 2013 after Smith had been sending emails to Jewish individuals and institutions, journalists, and news editors.

The board's national president, Mary Kluk, said they supported freedom of expression, but Smith had crossed the line.
