Cape Town  The two men accused of killing teenager Sinoxolo Mafevuka were relatives of her boyfriend, the State told the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The two men, who have denied that they raped and murdered Mafevuka in March, are her boyfriend's cousins. The magistrate has ordered that they not be named for their own safety.

The pair have also dismissed claims that they went in search of her days before her death. The State has alleged that Mafevuka had slept with a man other than her boyfriend.

The suspects, aged 21 and 26, were arrested in March, two weeks after the 19-year-old's body was found in a communal toilet.

During their bail application, investigating officer Constable Isaac Tshabalala testified that witnesses had seen the cousins near the toilets the night before her body was found.

'This thing is heavy'

One of the witnesses, who lives near the ablution block, also later heard the two – whom he said had grown up in front of him – from the inside of his shack, saying "please assist me, this thing is heavy" in isiXhosa.

"The witness said they were carrying something heavy. He heard the toilet door being opened, and then closed again before things went quiet," Tshabalala testified.

When police discovered her body, Mafevuka showed no external injuries.

She was naked and lying over the toilet with her clothes strewn across the scene. One of the items of clothing, a jersey, did not belong to her.

"[Residents] who had been at the scene said they had seen the two accused and [the boyfriend] wearing that jersey. The first accused last wore it the Sunday before her murder," Tshabalala said.

He testified that further investigation had revealed that Mafevuka’s boyfriend had been planning to marry her, but that "the victim was not on that".

The case was postponed until Wednesday.
