Mbombela - Mpumalanga's health department has allocated R30m to replace faulty generators at all health facilities in the province.

Department spokesperson Dumisane Malamule said many clinics and public hospitals were using old generators that were problematic. "The department has allocated about R30m for the replacement of generators in all health facilities. This will help ease the burden of power failure," he said.

The department now needed to appoint senior experts to help maintain the new infrastructure, he added.

Meanwhile, the number of patients waiting to undergo orthopaedic surgery has declined from 2 000 to 400 since January, he said, addressing public criticism from the opposition DA.

"The MEC [Gillion Mashego] has been able to secure an amount of R38m to ensure that the orthopaedic surgery is dealt with completely. It is acknowledged that the need for these operations escalates daily. As a way forward the MEC has come up with a plan to ensure that they centralised in regional and tertiary hospitals," said Malamule.
