Port Elizabeth - Four men tried to remove an ATM from the wall using a cutting torch in Newtown Park, Port Elizabeth police said on Tuesday.

The would-be bandits, however, failed in their attempt.

Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the four drove off in a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi in the early hours of Monday, taking a security guard with them.

He said they dropped the guard at Struanway, near Brighton.

An attempted robbery case was opened. No arrests have been made.
