Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the news that Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will be following up on her probe of the SABC.

Madonsela confirmed at the weekend that she would be following up on a report she compiled two years ago on governance failures at the public broadcaster, News24 reported on Monday.

The DA also requested that her investigation include a probe into a Sunday Times report that controversial COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng pushed through a R167m contract with a company co-owned by President Jacob Zuma's daughter, Gugu Zuma-Ncube.

"...Specifically, whether Jacob Zuma was at all involved in pushing through this deal, and made any contact with Mr Motsoeneng to ensure its success," party spokesperson Phumzile Van Damme said in a statement on Monday.

"The DA will continue to do everything possible to ensure that the political capture of the SABC by the ANC is brought to an end; and that the public broadcaster can assume its rightful place as an important institution, there to serve all South Africans."

Public Protector spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi earlier on Monday said Madonsela wants to establish if her remedial action recommended to the SABC board had been implemented or not.

This included setting up disciplinary action against Motsoeneng.
