DA CEO Paul Boughey has announced that he will be stepping down from the role in coming days.

In a memorandum, dated 17 October 2019, and sent to all party structures Boughey explains that he made the decision to allow the leadership and a new chair of the federal council "the space to chart their own course".

His decision comes just days before the DA holds a crucial federal council meeting where it will deliberate on the direction of the party, as well as electing a new federal chairperson. The outgoing chairperson is James Selfe, who has held the position for almost two decades.

Boughey who served as head of the operational aspect of the party for five years said he had reached an agreement with the party, of which will be made public in days to come.

In his memo to the party Boughey thanked those he worked with, describing the team as a dynamic, diverse and talented group, which was bound by a deep and abiding commitment to the party and building a non-racial country.

"I am especially grateful of having had the chance to work directly with James Selfe and Mmusi Maimane," said Boughey.

"James is truly one of the unsung heroes of South Africa's democratic dispensation. His wisdom, counsel and support has been invaluable, and the 40 years of service and counting he has offered this party and its predecessors is unlikely to ever be matched in our lifetime," said Boughey of the outgoing federal council chairperson.

The DA in a statement accepted his resignation.

"We wish him all the best in his future endeavours and thank him for his service to the DA and commitment to the broader Democratic Project," said party spokesperson Solly Malatsi.
