East London – With over 90% of the Eastern Cape’s votes having been counted by 16:00 on Thursday, the ANC was retaining most of its municipalities.

In the province’s economic hub, Nelson Mandela Bay, the DA was leading with 49.5% of the votes, followed by the ANC with 39.3%, after 84% of the votes had been counted.

The ANC was, however, leading in the Buffalo City Metro with 56.5%, followed by the DA with 27.94%. Only 70% of Buffalo City's votes had been counted.

ANC provincial leaders were huddled in intense discussion as the votes came in to the IEC centre in East London.

Seated together with ANC NEC member Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams were ANC provincial chairperson Phumulo Masualle, his deputy Sakhumzi Somyo, MECs Weziwe Tikana and Nancy Sihlwayi, and ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane.

The IEC's Eastern Cape electoral officer, Thami Mraji, earlier told journalists that the province would complete its vote counting ahead of schedule.
