Rustenburg - ANC Western Cape chairperson Marius Fransman must be suspended following a complaint of sexual harassment, the DA said on Friday.

"The ANC must act against its loose cannon Western Cape leader, or be seen to approve of his alleged sexual assault," Western Cape leader Patricia de Lille said in a statement.

"The desperate fight in South Africa against the scourge of sexual and domestic abuse is tragically undermined when party political leaders face criminal charges for these exact crimes."

The ANC confirmed on Friday that a charge of sexual harassment had been laid against Fransman.

"We are aware of the sexual harassment charge being laid against Marius," party spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.

"We have been in touch with Marius to get an explanation. Of course the law must take its course."

North West police spokesperson Sebata Mokgwabone told News24 on Friday that a case had been opened and was under investigation. No one has yet been arrested.

De Lille said there was no place for "sex offenders" in high political office.

Meanwhile, the Congress of the People also called for Fransman to be suspended from all leadership positions, pending the investigation. Spokesperson Dennis Bloem also called on the police to ensure that the complainant received the "full protection of the law".

"The fact that a charge has been laid with the police against Fransman... is indicative of its seriousness. The police so far have given no indication of the nature of the charge.

"In South Africa, the problem of serious sexual harassment and of rape has become so severe as to warrant the sternest legal action regardless of who the person is."
