DA's Trollip brings handkerchief for police minister

2016-02-16 18:15

Parliament – The Democratic Alliance’s Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip on Tuesday brought a handkerchief to Parliament to give to Police Minister Nathi Nhleko.

He could use it to wipe his brow when he had to tell the nation that the Nkandla "firepool" was merely a plain old pool.

“He is going to need this handkerchief,” he said.

Trollip advised other ANC MPs to buy handkerchiefs to wipe the “egg off their faces”.

“Thengani amatshefu  (buy handkerchiefs) man,” he advised especially the Nkandla Ad Hoc committee members.

This was regarding President Jacob Zuma’s recent offer to pay for the non-security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

Nhleko appeared to sweat profusely and used a handkerchief to wipe his brow when he presented his own report on Nkandla in May last year. At the time he said that all of the upgrades to Nkandla, including the "firepool", were necessary for security and Zuma was thus not liable to pay for them.

His findings contradicted Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's, who said Zuma should repay a reasonable amount of the money spent on those upgrades not related to security.
