Cape Town - Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille has wished Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu a speedy recovery.

This after Tutu was admitted for treatment for a recurring infection on Wednesday.

"On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I wish to extend our well wishes to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu while he undergoes treatment in hospital," De Lille said.

She said they carried Tutu, his wife Leah and the family in their thoughts and prayers during this time.

Tutu’s family on Wednesday said the 84-year-old had admitted himself to hospital.

"He is expected to remain in hospital for a week or two," they said in a statement.

More information would be shared as it became available, the family said.

There were no updates on his condition on Thursday afternoon.
