Pietermaritzburg - Disgruntled New Hanover residents are asking why their town has been without water for three days, during which there has been no sign of water tankers.

Pensioner Adri Schalkwyk said they had not had a single drop of water since Sunday evening.

“The water in New Hanover was turned off on Sunday, but we heard that Dalton and other areas still had water so we thought they might be having a problem with our supply,” she said.

“It came back on at 4 pm, but was then turned off again at 10 pm on Sunday, and we have been without water since. I called the water department of the municipality on Monday and they told me that there was water shedding and we would be without water for three days.”

Schalkwyk said the municipality had not sent any water tankers to the area and they had been forced to buy bottled water to drink and wash themselves.

Umgungundlovu District Municipality spokesperson Mbali Ndlovu said there was no water shedding in New Hanover , but there had been “an isolated water interruption in the New Hanover, Trustfeed and Wartburg areas”.

“These were caused by the overheating or tripping of the Dingle pump station due to the low volume of water from Wartburg reservoir.”

She said Umgeni Water technicians had been working with Umgungundlovu technicians to fix the problem.

“Our operations team have also deployed water tankers to service the affected areas.”

She said the town would have water as of yesterday afternoon.

“We apologise profusely for the inconvenience and we urge our customers to contact our 24-hour toll free call centre on 080 086 4911,” said Ndlovu.
