Pietermaritzburg - The Combined Action team is back and have arrested a man wanted for stabbing two police dogs last month.

The man was arrested in the Tamboville area on Friday morning, after two days of intensive investigations.

A police source said CAT members staked out the man’s house and pounced on him at about 10:00.

The knife believed to be used in the stabbing of police dogs Rex and Spike was also recovered from the premises.

The man will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Spike and Rex were both stabbed many times with a carving knife while tackling a burglar in the Bishopstowe area at the end of November.

Their handlers Constable Jackie Marais and Sergeant Shaun Noordman had tracked the burglar to Bishopstowe after a burglary in Cleland, and the dogs had been let loose to bring down the fleeing man.

In the frenzy, one dog was stabbed behind the neck near the shoulder and again near the ribs while the second dog was stabbed close to the lungs.

Both animals were rushed to a local vet during the early hours for treatment.

The dogs have since been making a speedy recovery and are expected to resume duties early next year.

The CAT has been newly reinstated after it had been disbanded when its term as a pilot project ended.
