Same same: twins graduate together with master's degrees

2016-04-13 08:05

Twin sisters Danielle and Tracey Steenkamp started Grade 1 together, and now they've capped their educational journey by sharing a stage and getting their master's degrees together.WATCH

Durban - Nosipho Nguse notched up two life milestones in one night when her boyfriend popped the question as she walked off the stage during her graduation ceremony at the University of KwaZulu-Natal last week.

Sanele Mhlungu, her new fiancé, told News24 that meeting Nguse at a graduation ceremony several years ago had been destiny.

The pair hail from the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands - Nguse from Merrivale and Mhlungu from Eastwood in Pietermaritzburg. Both are 25.

"The first time I saw her was actually at a graduation ceremony, but nothing happened. Then I met her properly on campus and we hit it off," he said.

Mhlungu said that he had doted on Nguse.

"We would study together and I would encourage her to succeed, because I know how much it means to her. When I met her, I told her that I need someone that I can grow with and I didn’t just want a frivolous relationship. I knew for a long time that I wanted to marry her," he said.

Leading up to the graduation ceremony last week, Mhlungu said that lobola negotiations between their two families were in full swing.

He said that when she had walked off stage after receiving her second degree in Education, he had summoned the courage and swept up to her, before dropping to one knee.

"Our families started with the negotiations and I have always had in mind to do something which was never done before to express how much I love her," he said.

He said that when he approached his bride-to-be, the crowd at the ceremony erupted with applause.

"It was an incredible feeling and it is something that we carried through to the weekend. We have both been so elated for the past couple of days," he said.
