Durban - Mystery surrounds a double shooting during a family gathering in the plush Durban suburb of La Lucia late on Sunday night.

Police, paramedics and security officials rushed to the home in Addison Drive, one of the most sought after areas in the city.

A police source with knowledge of the incident, who could not be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media, said that shots rang out shortly before 22:00.

“The information at hand is that there was a family function at the residence when the shooting occurred. At this point it is alleged that the victims are related to the suspect who did the shooting,” he said.

Police and security officers had entered the premises and once inside the house, had found a number of spent cartridges, two live rounds of handgun ammunition and spots of blood.

“One man had been shot in the abdomen and another had also been critically wounded, but it was unclear where he had been shot because he had already been rushed into theatre. Both of the wounded were rushed in private vehicles to the Umhlanga Hospital,” the source added.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the motive for the shooting was unknown.

“Two counts of attempted murder were opened at Durban North police station for investigation and no arrest has been made,” he said.
