Driver abandons abalone worth R1.1m at intersection

Cape Town – Police discovered 3 717 abalone in a Ford Figo abandoned at an intersection in Cape Town on Wednesday, a spokesperson said.

Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said a tip-off led police to the car at the intersection of Lansdowne Road and Mew Way with its cargo worth around R1.1m.

"The driver of the vehicle had fled the scene and the police are now hot on his heels," she said.

The mollusc is a delicacy known locally as perlemoen, but its harvesting, transporting and sale is strictly controlled.
