Durban - A man was killed in an early morning car accident on Inanda Road, near Trenance Park in Verulam, on Wednesday.

His passenger, a woman, was seriously injured and rushed to hospital.

Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said that paramedics were dispatched to the crash scene shortly after 08:00.

"Upon arrival reaction officers found an overturned Toyota Corolla lying against an embankment. A male driver and a female occupant were ejected from the vehicle and were found lying a few metres away," he said.

"Paramedics treated the woman and transported her to Osindisweni hospital. The driver was declared dead on the scene a short while later."

Balram said that, according to a witness, the driver of the speeding vehicle lost control, crossed over into the oncoming lane, climbed a steep embankment and somersaulted several times.
