Johannesburg – The city’s metro police were searching for the driver of a Toyota Hilux who allegedly ran away after five people were killed when he crashed into a barrier and a lamp pole on Monday evening.

"One of the passengers, who was not injured, told us that they are from Zimbabwe and he was transporting them to a place in Gauteng and that he was drinking alcohol while driving. They saw him drinking alcohol while driving," said Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar on Tuesday morning.

"The driver doesn't seem to have been injured because he ran away. He fled from the scene."

"He's still on the run," Minnaar said just before noon.

The accident happened on the M1 South between the Marlboro and Grayston off-ramps around 20:30.

Minaar said the driver was transporting 10 people when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a barrier and a lamp pole.

Five people were killed and two men were injured. Another two men and a woman escaped unharmed.

Once arrested, he will face five counts of culpable homicide, said Minnaar.
