Durban – A 30-year-old police officer was killed in a high-speed crash on the M19 highway near Westville, Durban, paramedics said on Friday.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 16:00 to find that a state motor vehicle had crashed at high speed with a stationary road maintenance vehicle.

Van Reenen said the driver – the only occupant of the vehicle – was trapped in the badly wrecked vehicle and had suffered fatal injuries. He was declared dead on the scene.

Police are investigating.
