Durban - KwaMashu police shot dead a gunman while he was shooting at another man, KwaZulu-Natal officials said on Sunday.

"In the early hours of this morning, KwaMashu police exchanged gunfire with a man who was shooting at another male along Luthuli Road in F section.

“The gunman was fatally wounded whilst his intended victim was injured. Police came off unscathed following the shootout whilst saving the life of the victim," said Brigadier Jay Naicker in a statement.

He said the police were conducting crime prevention operations in F Section when they spotted the gunman, aged 32, shooting at another man, aged 27.

The police tried to stop him but he then fired shots at the cops who retaliated.

"Both the victim and the suspect were taken to hospital for medical attention however the suspect passed away. Police seized the suspect’s firearm with eleven live rounds of ammunition.”

A case of attempted murder was opened at the KwaMashu police station for investigation.
