Durban - A Durban cyclist stabbed and killed a suspected robber and injured another when they attacked him in Pinetown at the weekend, police said on Wednesday.

They tried to rob him on an access road to the Giba Cycling Park on Sunday, police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said.

The cyclist produced a knife and fatally stabbed a 25-year-old man and injured his alleged accomplice. The injured man was taken to hospital under police guard.

Police opened an inquest docket and would investigate a case of attempted robbery.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics and police search and rescue members had to hike about 500m down a steep slope to get to the dead man. He had sustained a “penetrating wound” and died before they got to him.

The injured man was found along the path near a river with a “critical penetrating wound”. The police’s air wing airlifted him to an ambulance.

Giba Cycling Park coach and development officer Tyrone Johns said cyclists should drive to the park and ride there. Locals had fallen prey to robbers in the area where the attempted robbery happened.

“We put out warnings every now and then on Facebook and we have spoken to authorities. We have encouraged the police to visit us here to act as a deterrent to any criminal element.”
