Durban drowning brings death toll to 12 so far this year

KwaZulu-Natal – The drowning of a man on a Durban beach on Thursday brought to 12 the number of people who have drowned countrywide since January 1.

Two of the victims were children under the age of 2, according to a News24 tally of reports from ER24, Netcare 911 and the NSRI.

The KwaZulu-Natal health department said the 25-year-old man drowned while swimming at Durban's Wedge Beach around 14:30. He had died before help arrived.

On Monday, a 16-month-old baby fell into a pool in Pietermaritzburg and drowned, Netcare 911 said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak urged people to take care when swimming.
