Durban - A Durban man is fighting for his life after he was shot in the chest during what appears to have been a botched hijacking in KwaDabeka on Wednesday, paramedics said.

"On arrival, we found the man in a critical state having sustained a single gunshot wound. Medics immediately initiated care and set about trying to stabilise the man," Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said.

Jamieson said the 25-year-old was then rushed by ambulance to a Durban hospital where he remained in a critical condition.

He said the circumstances leading up to the shooting remained unclear.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said police were investigating a case of hijacking.
