Durban man savaged by 4 pit bulls

Durban – A Durban man sustained severe injuries when four pit bulls attacked him near his Palmview home.

The Post reported on Wednesday that Phoenix call centre agent Rakesh Rampersad, 28, thought he was going to be mauled to death as the dogs forced him to the ground around 17:30 on December 15.

He suffered injuries to his genitals, hands, and a leg.

"I was screaming for help, but people were too afraid to come near for fear that they would also be bitten," Rampersad was quoted as saying.

Neighbours used crowbars and sticks to beat the dogs off. Rampersad spent several days in hospital, where he underwent two operations to his groin and one to his leg.

"I have an appointment with the urologist on January 11. There is a lot of uncertainty at this point," he was quoted as saying.

The attack occurred days after an eight-year-old Howick boy, James Sinkins, was mauled to death by his neighbours' two German Shepherds after they jumped into the garden of his parents' home.

The owner of the pit bulls, Ruvashen Dorasamy, 25, was quoted by the Post saying, "Many of the boys, including the victim, provoke the dogs by poking the fence. It isn’t easy to break through a wire fence. So it must have taken time for my dogs to be aggravated."

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said Phoenix police were investigating a case of keeping a ferocious dog.
