Durban man stabbed to death after trying to save wife's handbag from muggers

Durban - A man was killed in an armed robbery on North Coast Road in Durban, a local security company said on Thursday.

The man was walking his wife to a bus stop on Wednesday night, when two men accosted them, Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen said.

"A vehicle stopped and two armed men approached them, demanding the woman’s handbag."

The husband took the purse and ran from the assailants, but they pursued him.

"A scuffle broke out in a nearby alleyway, with one of the suspects stabbing the man multiple times in the chest," Van Reenen said.   

Paramedics were called, but the man was declared dead on their arrival.

The man's wife was severely traumatised and the Durban North Umhlanga Crisis Team was called to counsel her, Van Reenen said.

Van Reenen said police were investigating.
