Durban – An operation run by the SAPS Ethekwini Central Cluster Trio Task Team has resulted in the arrest of two men found in possession of knives, gloves and a rock on Wednesday, police said on Thursday.

The police were conducting an operation specifically aimed at preventing criminal activities in the area, especially on highways.

"Suspects were spotted leaning over the Queen Nandi Drive – Inanda Road bridge, carrying a rock," police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said.

The men, aged 22 and 24, were immediately arrested and then detained at Greenwood Park police station.

KwaZulu-Natal's acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the task team members for the arrest.

"We will continue to fight rock-throwing incidents in the province to protect all the motorists. Highway patrols have been intensified and Visible Policing members are always visible in the area to search and apprehend all suspected criminals," he said.

The arrest follows several incidents of rock-throwing in the area, which resulted in vehicles being damaged.

The men were expected to appear at the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
